Madrid, 23 September 2026 — ABIO Energy has strengthened its European biomethane platform across its five operating regions — Iberia, Italy, Germany, Benelux and the United Kingdom — through acquisitions, construction activity, asset refurbishment and conversion projects. The expansion builds on the €1.5 billion committed by Asterion Industrial Partners, an independent investment management firm focusing on infrastructure investments in the European mid-market, announced in January 2026, with the ambition of building a leading pan-European player.

Following this progress, the platform comprises 17 operational assets and eight plants under construction, with annual production capacity of 1.6 TWh of biomethane while managing approximately 4.5 million tonnes of feedstock each year.

The current pipeline includes more than 4 near-RTB projects, alongside more than eight operational plants under exclusivity, bringing the company closer to its target of 40 biomethane plants across Europe by 2030, producing up to 3 TWh of biomethane annually. Building on this, ABIO’s regional teams continue to identify further opportunities to expand the platform.

“What makes ABIO unique is the combination of local expertise and a shared platform approach. This allows us to pursue different growth strategies across Europe while benefiting from the scale and experience of a broader group.”

ABIO Energy European biomethane platform milestones

Growth built market by market

ABIO Energy’s growth has not followed a single formula, with each region operating through its own local vehicle and management team, allowing the platform to adapt its strategy to the maturity of each market. In the more established markets of Central and Northern Europe, growth is driven by the acquisition and transformation of existing assets, while in Southern Europe the focus remains on greenfield development.

In the United Kingdom, Pinta Energy acquired Generate Upcycle UK, adding seven operational assets with expansion capacity together with its experienced management team, and acquired an operational asset and a development project from Marubeni. Following these transactions, the UK business owns nine operational assets and one project under development.

In Germany, Byont Deutschland has acquired two plants and signed the acquisition of another one, taking its portfolio to five operational assets. In Benelux, the focus has been on asset transformation: Byont Benelux has continued the refurbishment and conversion to biomethane of two assets, while its third asset continues to generate renewable electricity.

In Southern Europe, meanwhile, the platform is building from the ground up. Five Bioenergy is constructing three biomethane plants in Iberia, two of which are expected to begin injecting biomethane by the first quarter of 2027. The company has also signed its first contract for the sale of biofertiliser to the agricultural sector in Spain’s Murcia region. In Italy, Fiamma Verde is finalising the construction of its first four projects and has started work on a fifth.
