Asterion to invest €1.5 bn into European biomethane

  • The investment includes €800 million of equity, comprising €400 million from Asterion Industrial Infra Fund III and €400 million in co-investment commitments from existing investors.
  • ABIO is rapidly scaling its European footprint, with six operational biomethane plants, six under construction, and a target of 20 operational facilities by the end of 2026.
  • ABIO has established a presence in five key European markets—Iberia, Italy, Germany, Benelux and the United Kingdom— with a strategy tailored to local market conditions.

Madrid, January 14 2026 – Asterion Industrial Partners, an independent investment management firm focused on European mid-market infrastructure, has committed €1.5 billion to its European biomethane platform, ABIO (Asterion Bioenergy), with the ambition of building a leading pan-European player. The investment will support the development and operation of assets across key markets, deploying strategies tailored to local market maturity and backed by strong local teams and partnerships.

This investment capacity includes €800 million of equity, comprising €400 million committed by Asterion Industrial Infra Fund III and an additional €400 million in co-investment commitments from existing investors.

A significant portion of the capital has already been deployed to grow ABIO’s European footprint. The platform currently operates six biomethane plants, with six additional facilities under construction, and has completed nearly ten transactions in recent months, including greenfield developments, acquisitions and asset conversions. ABIO, led by Asterion CEO Jesús Olmos alongside Irene Otero-Novas, CEO of ABIO and Operating Partner at Asterion, is on track to reach 20 operational plants by the end of 2026.

ABIO represents exactly the type of platform we seek to back: scalable, capital-efficient and positioned at the intersection of the energy transition and long-term infrastructure demand,” said Jesús Olmos, CEO and Founding Partner of Asterion Industrial.

With this funding and a strong development pipeline, ABIO is expected to achieve a biomethane production capacity of approximately 3 TWh within the next three to four years, reinforcing its role in Europe’s energy transition.

“This capital raise reflects the strong conviction of our investors in biomethane as a scalable and strategic solution for Europe’s energy transition,” added Winnie Wutte, Founding Partner of Asterion Industrial. “ABIO combines energy security, decarbonization and sustainable waste management through a fully integrated, long-term infrastructure approach.”

Pan-European Platform

ABIO has established a presence in five key European markets — Iberia, Italy, Germany, Benelux and the United Kingdom — with a strategy tailored to local market conditions. In more mature markets in Central and Northern Europe, growth is driven by the acquisition and transformation of existing assets, while in Southern Europe the focus is on greenfield developments. Operations are managed by local vehicles supported by specialized teams in each geography, ensuring deep market expertise and strong relationships with agricultural suppliers and regulatory authorities.

“ABIO is scaling with discipline, combining a visible development pipeline with selective acquisitions to build a diversified, pan-European biomethane platform with strong long-term fundamentals.” Irene Otero-Novas, CEO at ABIO and Operating Partner at Asterion Industrial Partners.

The platform operates in Iberia through FiveBioenergy, where two plants are currently under construction and additional projects are expected to be launched in the near term, with at least two more projects starting construction during 2026. Facilities in the region are typically larger in scale than those in Northern Europe.

In Italy, the platform owns Fiamma Verde, where four assets are currently under construction and will be operational in 2026. Additional growth is targeted for next year, with several projects targeted to be acquired this year.

Benelux operations are carried out under Byont, with two operational plants currently being transformed from power generation to biomethane, alongside a large third biomethane facility undergoing upgrades. Other acquisitions are targeted for 2026.

In Germany, ABIO operates via Byont DE, where two Bio-LNG plants are already in operation, and further acquisitions are underway.

The United Kingdom business is conducted through Pinta Energy, which currently operates one biomethane facility, and several plants and greenfield projects are currently being targeted.

Circular Economy and Long-Term Ambition

The platform follows a fully integrated circular economy model, transforming agricultural residues into renewable biomethane, captured CO₂ for industrial use, and digestate, a high-quality natural fertilizer. Biomethane plays a growing role in decarbonization due to its ability to replace natural gas using existing infrastructure while addressing agricultural waste management challenges.

Looking ahead, Asterion targets the operation of 40 biomethane plants across Europe by 2030, producing up to 3.5 TWh of biomethane annually, equivalent to the energy consumption of more than 220,000 households, and avoiding up to 8 million tons of CO₂ equivalent emissions.
